Notes

Sublines: 12 sublines were established from the parental line and designated SeHe920Y1 to SeHe920Y12; Morphology: the parental line primarily contains spherical or spindle shaped cells, spherical-shaped cells were more frequently observed in SeHe920YS, SeHe920Y6, SeHe920Y10, and SeHe920Y11 cell cultures, compared with the parental SeHe920-1a cell culture; SeHe920Y4 and SeHe920Y9 cell lines contained a large number of attached cells with well-developed filopodia; Growth characteristics: doubling time = 28 h; Karyology: the parental cell line is heteroploid and the chromosome number ranged from 31 to 246; after 51 passages, the parental cell line was mainly composed of triploid and tetraploid cells; Distinguishing characteristics: an inoculation study with polystyrene microspheres of two sizes (6.14 + 0.45 mm and 2.84 + 0.14 mm in diameter) and inactivated spores of an entomopathogenic microsporidium, Vairimorpha sp. NIS M12 (5.10 + 0.21 mm X 2.00 + 0.11 mm) showed the phagocytic activities of selected lines; this activity was enhanced in SeHe920Y6, SeHe920Y7, SeHe920Y10, and SeHe920Y11 clonal lines compared with the parental one (~50 and 40% of cells were phagocytic in the SeHe920u and SeHe920Y10 cell lines, respectively), with the average number of microsporidian spores engulfed/cell in these lines increasing two times compared with that of the parental cell line.
